The Winter War Museum
The Winter War Museum (Väinämöinen 11, 88900 Kuhmo) is located 4 km from the centre of Kuhmo. The events of the Winter War in Kuhmo are displayed through objects, photographs, miniatures, and sound effects.
You can learn about the daily lives of evacuated civilians, and the Finnish and Soviet soldiers. The museum, opened in 1994, features themes around the evacuees, the fate of the village centre, the front line and the medical supply, as well as the battles and the post-war period.
Untold Arctic Wars – digital exhibition
The exhibition can be found near the Winter War Museum. It is based on the documentary series of the same name, which deals with the unexplored events of World War II in the Arctic region.
The digital exhibition includes expert interviews, animated images, and maps which are available to visitors through touch screens. It is also possible to view a short film about the Winter War (15min).
Entry to the exhibition is free via the Winter War Museum.
Military historical sites
The original traces of the wars are still visible in many places. You can explore the restored Winter War defence positions in Jyrkänkoski and Saunajärvi, as well as the restored encirclement base of the Red Army in Paloaho. Memorials and memorial plaques of the Winter War and the Continuation War are located throughout the municipality area.
Guided Winter War tour
The guided Winter War tour takes about seven hours, during which it is possible to get acquainted with the key battle sites. The tour includes about 110 km of driving from the centre of Kuhmo.
