Guided tours at the military historical sites of Western Lapland

Military historical sites

There are few visible original traces of the Lapland War, but there are memorials in many regions. The most significant battles of the war were the landing at Tornio, and the capturing of Kemi, which both have several memorials at the battle area.

The most significant battles of the Lapland War were fought in Western Lapland even though there are military historical sites throughout the whole Lapland area.

Järämä fortress area

The Sturmbock Stellung, or the Järämä fortress area of the Lapland War is a rare and well-preserved example of German fortification skills.

The fortress area is located in Enontekiö along the main road 21/E8, about 20 km from the village of Karesuvanto towards Kilpisjärvi, between the villages of Mauno and Luspa.

The area has several restored dugouts, trenches, a museum and a cafe.

The complete destruction of Rovaniemi is best exhibited at Arktikum (Arktikum House, Pohjoisranta 4, 96200 Rovaniemi).

The German military cemetery can also be visited near Rovaniemi (Lentosatamantie 60, Norvajärvi, 96900 Rovaniemi).
