Guided tours at the military historical sites of Salla
The military historical sites in the direction of Salla are located in the municipalities of Salla, Pelkosenniemi, and Savukoski.
Salla Museum of War and Reconstruction
The museum is located near the centre of Salla, in the old residences of the railway workers in the former railway station area of Salla. In addition to the exhibition spaces, the building includes a museum shop and a café. There is also an outdoor exhibition in the museum area and Salla’s Rajakievari tavern.
The permanent exhibition presents the Kuolajärvi village in the early 20th century before the wars, the turbulent wartime, and the massive reconstruction effort that followed the war, in which the municipality of Salla strove to rise again.
Military historical sites
The original traces of the wars are still visible in many places. You can explore the defence positions of the Winter War, for example, in Joutsijärvi and Paikanselkä. Memorials and memorial plaques of the Winter War and the Continuation War are located throughout the municipality area.
Guided military history tour
The guided military history tour in the Salla area takes about nine hours, during which it is possible to get acquainted with the key battle sites. The driving distance from Joutsijärvi is about 270 km. It is possible to divide the tour into two days depending on the accommodation.
